Country singer Dan Zanes confesses that he doesn't know much about Broadway, but he knows the kind of the music he likes. The former member of the 1980s band The Del Fuegos, who now has his own Grammy-winning group, Dan Zanes and
Friends, has put out an album of showtunes titled "76 Trombones." But they're not like any showtunes you're used to hearing. Zanes visits Playbill Radio to explain the why and how.
Highlights from the New York Times' Arts &
Leisure Weekend conversation with three Pulitzer Prize-winning playwrights:
John Patrick Shanley ("Doubt"), Beth Henley ("Crimes of the
Heart") and Donald Margulies ("Dinner With Friends" and the new
Broadway drama "Time Stands Still"). They tell what inspires them,
what moves them, and what they're planning next.
Special guest is Zero Mostel--or the closest we're going to get: Jim Brochu the actor who plays the late star
of "Fiddler on the Roof" and "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" in the one-man Off-Broadway show, "Zero Hour." Brochu will tell stories about Mostel's life and perform two monologues from the show.
Guests are songwriters Zina Goldrich and Marcy Heisler ("Dear Edwina," "Ever After" and the cabaret standard "Taylor the Latte Boy"), who were recently named winners of the Fred Ebb Award and released a new studio album of their best songs.
