"Fela!" |
|
While Broadway was focusing on "Billy Elliot" earlier this year, Off-Broadway was jumping to the music of its own hit musical, "Fela!" a stage biography of Fela Kuti, a real-life musician and revolutionary who used his music as a political force to fight the dictators who ran his native Nigeria in Africa. Along the way he fused several kinds of international and local pop music into a style that came to be known as Afro-Beat. Several different artists came together to create this show, including Tony-winning choreographer Bill T. Jones, the band Anitbalas, and the actors Kevin Mambo and Lillias White. All of them had discovered Fela separately, but together they tell host Robert Viagas how they have forged a musical biography that is moving to the big time. |
