As its summer offering, Roundabout Theatre Company and playwright Marc Saltzman are taking Off-Broadway audiences back in time to 1911 or so to a mythical meeting between two songwriting titans, the white Jewish-American hitmaker Irving Berlin and the African-American king of Ragtime Scott Joplin. They are played, respectively, by Michael Therriault and Michael Boatman, and host Robert Viagas met up with both actors backstage at the Laura Pels Theatre where they talked about music, history, personal tragedy, songwriting and in the case of Therriault, playing Gollum in the musical of "Lord of the Rings." |
